From the Methodist Church Website:-

A Prayer for Aldersgate Sunday 2020

By the Revd Dr Martyn Atkins

Resourceful Holy Spirit of God,
We thank you for your servants, John and Charles Wesley.

That you fuelled their zeal
and tempered it with divine grace;
brought them through dark times,
enlightened and renewed.

That you warmed their needy hearts,
assured and shaped them by your active holiness.
That through their willingness,
you worked out Your purposes of hope, mercy, and justice.

Somewhat daunted, we stand today in their deep footsteps.
In a world of new challenges and old needs in a time like no other.

But undaunted, we humbly ask you to do in us,
what you did in and through them.

May we know both your infilling and outpouring,
that whatever our situation or condition,
we will serve and honour Christ,
and in these, our days, know and believe
that the best of all is, “God is with us.”

Amen.

Sad News

We are saddened to hear news of the death of the mother of Sandra from The Well. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family at this time. We also remember our ministers, and others in Colchester, who will be conducting funerals in these unusual times, and pray for all concerned.

Good News

We are excited to hear from Sinu that Anara and Livai from Castle have a new baby brother, Freddie. Mum and baby are doing well. Congratulations to you all!

Christian Aid News

Geoff has asked us to thank everyone who took part in whatever way in the ‘virtual’ Christian Aid Week. All their donations will be used to support some of the poorest and most vulnerable people in our world. If you haven’t got around to it yet here is a last chance to do so at www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Geoff-Casey

HSBC and The Big Shift Campaign

During Lent 2019 over 60 people at Castle signed a Christian Aid petition calling upon HSBC to cease funding coal-based projects in Vietnam, Indonesia and Bangladesh.  You will be pleased to know that at the AGM of HSBC held in April the decision was made to stop funding coal-based projects in these countries.  Thank you to everybody who signed the petition.  It shows that however much we feel like David in the face of a hugely powerful and wealthy Goliath like HSBC, campaigning can still make a difference!  More details can be found on the Christian Aid website.

For more information about these activities, or to tell us about your news from around the circuit for inclusion next time, please contact colchester.methodists@gmail.com

Above all, keep yourselves safe and well.

Let someone know if you are struggling, if you need a chat, or just some shopping. Do contact your pastoral leader, or send someone an email:  you may be in isolation, but you are not alone.

Finally, a new prayer from the Methodist Church Website:-

Prayer from Canada

My prayers are for those who are hurting and scared, those who rely on services that are having to close, and those who will find themselves quickly in need.

My prayers are also for you, those who minister in the midst of this crisis – that you will remain healthy, that you will care for yourself, even as you care for those with whom you have been called to minister. We pray for the healing and mending of the world.

May we find tangible ways of supporting each other – and all of God’s world – in this time, and in the days to come, and may we know that, no matter what, as we “love and serve others,” as we “seek justice and resist evil,” as we “proclaim Jesus,” with our words and our actions, we will find a way through this, together.

God is with all creation.

We are not alone.

Christ’s peace,

Richard Bott (The Right Reverend)
Moderator / Modérateur
The United Church of Canada / L’Église Unie du Canada

Gracious God, in a world where corruption, deceit, suspicion and ‘fake news’ regularly fill the headlines, we are full of gratitude for the gospel of Christ, which brings light, hope, truth and ‘good news’ into our lives.

Christian Aid Week 2020

Christian Aid Week 2020 will soon be upon us. It runs from Sunday 10th May to Saturday 16th May. The present circumstances mean that Christian Aid Week will look very different this year – no House to House collection, no Soup and Snack Lunch, no Quiz, in fact nothing that involves physical contact with others. Despite this Christian Aid Week goes ahead – digitally!!

For more information about how you can help, please go to  www.christianaid.org.uk

Alternatively, you may choose to visit the Just Giving page which Geoff has set up for the Colchester Christian Aid Group. This link will also be shared directly with folks who have  supported Christian Aid locally in the past. You might feel able to share this link with your contacts, whether they live in Colchester or not! It is www.justgiving.com/fundraising/Geoff-Casey

A prayer for the church

May your love that never fails

strengthen the weak

encourage the fearful

calm the anxious

heal the sick

through your church –

your washed hands

and feet on earth –

distant but still present

virtual but still connected

apart but still helping.

God in your mercy,

hear our prayer.

Amen.

Loving God,
If we are ill, strengthen us.
If we are tired, fortify our spirits.
If we are anxious, help us to consider the lilies of the field and the birds of the air.

Help us not to stockpile treasures from supermarkets in the barns of our larders.
Don’t let fear cause us to overlook the needs of others more vulnerable than ourselves.
Fix our eyes on your story and our hearts on your grace.

Help us always to hold fast to the good,
See the good in others,
And remember there is just one world, one hope,
One everlasting love, with baskets of bread for everyone.

In Jesus we make our prayer,
The one who suffered, died and was raised to new life,
In whom we trust these days and all days,

Amen.
