This weeks’ Notices are at the bottom of the page. They will keep you updated of news around the Circuit, and of activities that are taking place (usually online!). Please let us know of anything that should be included.

The YouTube channel for Colchester Methodists continues to have videos uploaded regularly. If you follow this link, it will take you there: https://www.youtube.com/ColchesterMethodists

  • There are the Worship Services for each Sunday since lock-down.

You can also leave a brief message in the comments below each video, but PLEASE don’t forget that literally EVERYONE worldwide can see this, so don’t make any personal comments, or refer to people in a way that risks their privacy in any way.

A Prayer from the Methodist Church Website:-

Prayer from the Revd Ruth Gee, Assistant Secretary of the Conference.

As we continue to see and hear reports of devastation in Beirut we pray for those who are bereaved or injured and for those responding to the catastrophe that has engulfed the city.

Gracious God,

We pray for those who live and work in Beirut that

the bereaved may be consoled and

the injured comforted and healed.

We pray for the rescue services and the hospital staff

giving thanks for their commitment and skill.

In the midst of catastrophe we pray for peace, truth and justice.

As the sound of explosion fades and the smoke clears

give wisdom to those who lead,

courage to those who serve,

and hope to all.

Amen.

God of all hope we call on you today.
We pray for those who are living in fear:
Fear of illness, fear for loved ones, fear of other’s reactions to them.
May your Spirit give us a sense of calmness and peace.

We pray for your church in this time of uncertainty.
For those people who are worried about attending worship.
For those needing to make decisions in order to care for others.
For those who will feel more isolated by not being able to attend.
Grant us your wisdom.

Holy God, we remember that you have promised that
Nothing will separate us from your love – demonstrated to us in Jesus Christ.
Help us turn our eyes, hearts and minds to you.

Amen.

An intercessory prayer

You call us to speak to you in prayer– even when the places we would usually go to are not available.
Help us to know you Spirit’s presence wherever we pray.
Today we especially pray for those who are living in fear – give them your strength.
For those who have not yet realised the urgency of the situation – protect them, and all of us from harm.
Today I especially want to pray for …….
In the name of Jesus.
Amen.

This cannot now take place so two Circuit members from the same household will be doing the walk on 11th July , on behalf of all of us. Please support them by going to the Action for Children website and make a donation. On the Donation page select Donation Type as “I am giving on behalf of a church/school” you will then see another box where you can type Colchester Methodist Circuit. More details here.

A reminder from our Church Treasurers

While our buildings remain closed for all activities, there are still regular bills to be paid. If you are part of an envelope giving scheme, or would usually set aside cash to give as an offering in church each week,  could you consider alternative forms of giving? Perhaps online banking, or contributing by cheque or standing order? Your local Church Treasurer would love to hear from you about this.

For more information about these activities, or to tell us about

your news from around the circuit for inclusion next time, please contact colchester.methodists@gmail.com

Be sure to keep yourselves safe and well.

Let someone know if you are struggling, if you need a chat, or just some shopping. Do contact your pastoral leader, or send someone an email:  you may be in isolation, but you are not alone.

Opening for Worship ?

Statement by the Stewards and Staff of
Colchester Methodist Circuit

6th July 2020

Opening of our chapels for Worship

Possibly due to pronouncements from the United Kingdom government (made without consultation with the Methodist Church at any level) there has been speculation and rumour abounding that the church communities of the Colchester Methodist Circuit will be opening their chapels for worship and other activities, if not on July 5, as per government statements, then very soon after. We write this statement to dispel and deny these rumours, and to lay out our position clearly, as those who are charged with the stewardship and good governance of this Circuit, who have a duty of care to all our members, attenders at worship, and other users of our premises.

We will not be recommending the opening of our buildings for worship on Sunday mornings until September at the earliest, and possibly not even then, depending upon developments in the spread or containment of the COVID-19 virus.

The virus has not been eradicated. There are still large numbers of people becoming infected each day, and although the mortality rate is decreasing, deaths attributed to COVID-19 still number in the hundreds each day.

We do not believe the delivery of any act of worship is worth putting at risk the lives of our members.

Our Circuit demographic is such that the vast majority of our members and attenders fall into the vulnerable category simply for reasons of age, and that is not taking into account those who have underlying health issues which also increase their vulnerability. Until such time as an efficient vaccine is discovered, tested, and distributed, or effective treatments for the effects of the virus are discovered and deployed, any gathering of our folk is fraught with difficulty, and gatherings in the kind of numbers we would normally expect on a Sunday morning in most of our chapels (even if legally allowable) cannot be deemed “safe” even if the risks are mitigated by strict adherence to the Methodist Church’s Risk Assessment guidelines. We can possibly make things safer, but we cannot make them safe.

The ministers, local preachers, and worship leaders of the Circuit will pledge to continue to provide high quality acts of worship, bible Study, and fellowship meetings online, by various media including YouTube, Facebook, WhatsApp, and other outlets, which can be accessed by all who have internet connections. Further, we do and will continue to provide CDs and DVDs, if possible, of all such acts of worship for those who do not have internet access.

We currently have a range of ways of meeting together online, and will be extending the provision of these services, and exploring ways increasing our outreach, as the weeks go on.

The Ongoing Life of the Circuit

It is clear that the advent of this virus has rocked the foundations of our society. We in the churches are no more immune to that shaking than we are to the virus itself, but we believe that God speaks to his people in and through all circumstances. We need to ask some searching questions, both of ourselves and of our communities. Decisions on the way in which we will respond as a Circuit, and as individual churches within the Circuit, will of course need to be made.

We will spend some time over the next few months discussing the shape of the Circuit’s life in the future, and the ways in which we will need to adapt our continuing Circuit life in order to maintain the pastoral care of all our people.

Action for Children Sponsored Walk

A sponsored walk had been arranged some time ago by the Circuit Social Issues Working Group, to raise funds for Action for Children.

This cannot now go ahead, but we feel we should do all we can to encourage the Circuit to raise money for Action for Children, especially as the charity is likely to lose out on many fund raising efforts due to the current pandemic.

Due to the current requirements for social distancing two Circuit members from the same household will be doing the walk on Saturday 11th July 2020, on behalf of all of us.

Please support them by going to the Action for Children website and make a donation. On the Donation page select Donation Type as “I am giving on behalf of a church/school” you will then see another box where you can type Colchester Methodist Circuit.

Alternatively speak to someone from your local church who may be able to accept a cheque or cash offering.

A Zoom Men’s Group Meeting has been arranged for

Thursday 9th July 2020 at 7.30pm.

All men within the Colchester Methodist Circuit are invited to join in.

We shall be welcoming two guests to our meeting.

The manager of Colchester Age Concern will talk briefly on their services, and how they might change after the pandemic, especially where men are concerned.

A member of the Mental Health Trust in Clacton will also be present. In the early spring they asked if the Trust could work with us to help isolated men, mainly in the Highwoods area. Now that normal life is returning, it seems a good opportunity to discuss whether and how to pursue this.

For more details please drop an email to John and Tony who will be able to give you the relevant password to join.

A Prayer From the Methodist Church Website:-

Amen.
