Churches Together in England:-

Here’s a message from Churches Together in England

Finally, a prayer from the President of the Methodist Conference, Rev’d Barbara Glasson

Loving God,
If we are ill, strengthen us.
If we are tired, fortify our spirits.
If we are anxious, help us to consider the lilies of the field and the birds of the air.

Help us not to stockpile treasures from supermarkets in the barns of our larders.
Don’t let fear cause us to overlook the needs of others more vulnerable than ourselves.
Fix our eyes on your story and our hearts on your grace.

Help us always to hold fast to the good,
See the good in others,
And remember there is just one world, one hope,
One everlasting love, with baskets of bread for everyone.

In Jesus we make our prayer,
The one who suffered, died and was raised to new life,
In whom we trust these days and all days,

Amen.

Above all, Keep yourselves safe and well.

Let someone know if you are struggling, if you need a chat, or just some shopping. Do contact your pastoral leader, or send someone an email:  you may be in isolation, but you are not alone.

Coronavirus Update 17 03 2020

Since our last communication on Sunday evening (15 03 2020) and the subsequent increase in Covid 19 response, we have been waiting for updated advice from the Methodist Church in Great Britain, that advice has been posted as of 3 o’clock this afternoon.

The full announcement  can be found here https://www.methodist.org.uk/about-us/coronavirus-guidance/  (this will continue to be updated on the Methodist Church website) but in essence it includes the following advice:

All gathered worship services have been suspended until further notice.

The staff team will prepare weekly worship.  We’re investigating what forms that might encompass but it’s likely to include streamed video, audio CDs and printed material so that everybody can continue to be connected to the worship life of the circuit.  Joe is preparing something for us all to share this coming Sunday (Mothering Sunday).

All non-essential gathering, to include all of the business meetings of the church, are also suspended until further notice.

You will know from the rolling news reports that all people over 70 years old and those with underlying health conditions are encouraged to prepare to isolate themselves in order to slow down the rate of development of the virus.  That probably includes the majority of us, so most pastoral work will need to be carried out by phone.

The staff team are working on further recommendations as to how we will care for each other in this difficult time.  We are a people of hope and that hope will never be lost, but we also need to be careful stewards of our own health, the needs of our communities and the load we place on the health service and emergency services and as Mr Wesley said ‘best of all, God is with us’.

Please would you share this information with your church families and keep safe.

PLEASE CIRCULATE AS NECESSARY AND ENSURE THAT EVERYONE IS AWARE THAT WE WON’T BE MEETING UNTIL FURTHER NOTICE.

A prayer from www.methodist.org.uk

God of all hope we call on you today.
We pray for those who are living in fear:
Fear of illness, fear for loved ones, fear of other’s reactions to them.
May your Spirit give us a sense of calmness and peace.

We pray for your church in this time of uncertainty.
For those people who are worried about attending worship.
For those needing to make decisions in order to care for other
For those who will feel more isolated by not being able to attend.
Grant us your wisdom.

Holy God, we remember that you have promised that
Nothing will separate us from your love – demonstrated to us in Jesus Christ.
Help us turn our eyes, hearts and minds to you.

Amen

Coronavirus Update 15 03 2020

Coronavirus Update 15 03 2020

The Colchester Methodist Circuit Leadership Team met this afternoon and the following are the recommendations from that meeting: –

Church Services & Meetings:

Church services and church meetings will continue until advice from the Methodist Church/the government directs otherwise.

If circumstances arise where it is not possible to provide a leader for worship, information will be provided as to where worship is being maintained and can be attended.

Communication Network:

Each church will set up its own communications network such that members and friends know who to contact if they have a need.

Members and friends who feel themselves vulnerable should be at liberty not to meet. They should be made aware of who they can contact for service/study material.

Members and friends who feel unwell should remain at home, in their own interests and that of others.

Hire of Church Premises:

Where groups hire church premises these activities should be allowed to continue.

It is recommended that a risk assessment is carried out for groups hiring church premises. This should include any risk there might be to the persons leading activities.

Care should be taken to facilitate any cleaning of rooms and equipment necessary between hire groups and activities.

Churches should make themselves cognisant of the current recommendations regarding the well-being of persons whilst on church premises, e.g. not handshaking, ensuring hand washing facilities, using paper towels rather than ‘blow-dry’ equipment, etc.

Upcoming meetings:

The Circuit Study Day scheduled for 4th April 2020 has been postponed indefinitely.

The Leadership Team Meeting scheduled for 24th March and the Circuit Meeting scheduled for 1st April will go ahead as planned.

Make Lunch Service 01 03 2020

MakeLunch is a charity whose stated aim is to ‘end holiday hunger’ by feeding children and families who struggle in school holidays.

Additionally MakeLunch groups form communities who grow together and support one another.

The Colchester Methodist Circuit is blessed to soon have three such projects serving their neighbourhoods.

The first of these is situated at The Well in Mile End.

On 1st March 2020 at 6:30pm we will be holding a celebration service to thank God for three years of lunches and friendship in school holidays.

Please do join us if you can.

Mens Group Breakfast March 2020 POSTPONED

Updated 13 03 2020

Please Note:

The Men’s Breakfast scheduled for Saturday 21st March 2020, and detailed below, has been postponed until further notice.

Several months ago John and Tony at The Ark thought it would be good to have a Men’s Group that could meet for breakfast once a month.  The idea was to provide an opportunity when men could get together, enjoy a meal, discuss various topics of common interest and help each other.  It was also thought that on occasions having a guest speaker to talk on a specific topic might be of interest.

As there was limited interest at The Ark it was decided to invite friends along from The Well, Mile End, and this proved a good idea.

At our first meeting eight of us enjoyed a good breakfast, and our guest speaker was Rev Ken.  It was agreed that we would invite men from other churches within the Circuit to join us, and our numbers are slowing growing.

Our next meeting is scheduled for Saturday 21st March 2020 at The Ark, Highwoods Methodist Church, commencing at 9.00 am.  We would like to see some new members, and if you plan to come please drop an email to John and Tony in order that we can plan the catering.

We would be very pleased if notice of this could be circulated within your Church and the poster below put on your notice board or screen notices.

Methodist Walks: March 2020

The pattern of a monthly led walk of the past few years will be continued in 2020.

These take place on the second Tuesday afternoon of most months.

Beginning in February 2020 and going through to November 2020.

The walks are usually of about 4 miles in length, with the occasional one of 5 miles.

The walk planned for Tuesday 10th March will continue the practice from February of staying on surfaced paths as field paths will still be muddy after the rain that has fallen in January and February.

The walk is a little under 5 miles with the opportunity to shorten it to a little over 3 miles if selected. The only hills are downhill!

The c5 mile walk will start at Castle Methodist Church at 2.00pm. We will walk down through Castle Park and along the river bank paths to The Hythe. After crossing the river, we shall take the riverside path to Wivenhoe. Once we are at Wivenhoe at approximately 4.00pm, there is the opportunity to independently return to Colchester/look around/obtain a cup of tea. There is a good service of ‘buses back into the town centre or it is possible to take the train back to the Town or North stations (once an hour to each). There is no need to let me know if you are planning to join the walk at Castle Church.

Anyone wishing to do the c3 mile shorter walk will need to be at The Hythe railway station by 2.30pm as we shall be passing there a few minutes after 2.30pm. If you will be joining the walk at The Hythe station, please let Derek know. Incidentally, there is a waiting shelter on the open platform at The Hythe station.

If anyone would like to join the walk, or hear about plans for future walks, please contact Derek.
